On the Name Missouri
When at the general convention of the synod in St. Louis in the year 1878 the question of establishing state synods was discussed, into which the then extensive Synodical Conference was divided, Dr. Walther, as president of the Missouri Synod, exclaimed publicly: “The devil has invented the name ‘Missourish’.” Hochstetter/Kramer, 96.
